Professor Graham MacGregor, Chairman of CASH and WASH says:
“This paper once again enforces the fact that salt reduction is an international priority. It outlines a clear and practical approach that has already had proven success in the UK - we urge all countries around the world to follow suit immediately.
“The UK has been leading the world by slowly reducing the huge amounts of salt hidden in processed food and, now that the world is looking to us, it is essential that the Department of Health keeps the policy on track. The benefits for salt reduction are enormous; every 1 gram of salt removed from the UK diet is predicted to prevent 6,000 deaths and a further 6,000 non-fatal strokes and heart attacks.
“The food industry has a huge responsibility for preventing these deaths, not just in the UK but worldwide, and we are pleased that this analysis acknowledges the vital role they have to play in salt reduction.”
