Here are some tips to reduce your salt intake whilst cooking:

  • Ready-made ingredients all vary in the amount of salt they contain, e.g. chicken, beef or vegetable stock; cheeses such as mozzarella or cheddar cheese; bread rolls, pitta breads or wraps and spreads. Look out for lower salt options when you’re shopping – use our award winning free smartphone app: FoodSwitch UK to help you find healthier options.
  • When boiling potatoes, pasta, noodles or rice, don’t add salt to the water!
  • Opt for wholegrain where possible e.g. pasta, bread and rice.
  • In our recipes, we use plenty of lemon, lime, ginger, garlic, chilli, tomato puree, fresh herbs such as parsley, coriander and mint, and spices such as cumin, paprika and garam marsala to replace the salt. A great way to keep fresh herbs for longer is to store them in the freezer and add them when you're cooking!
