Why can't we cut salt: is it time to switch the world's salt supply?

Wednesday 17th May 2023 8:30am BST

As part of World Salt Awareness Week C3 is joined by Professor Bruce Neal of The George Institute (TGI) and Mhairi Brown from Action on Salt UK, to talk about reducing saltExcess salt intake is a key cause of heart disease and stroke but with it so entrenched in our diets how can we address it?

Prof Neal will share his vision for TGI’s goal of switching the world’s salt supply to potassium-enriched salt. He will highlight key findings from the landmark Salt Substitute and Stroke Study which randomised 21,000 participants to regular salt or potassium-enriched salt, considering how the unequivocal evidence of protection against stroke and premature death generated by that study can inform stalled global efforts to reduce dietary sodium intake.

Meanwhile, Mhairi will shed light on the barriers and opportunities to increasing the uptake of reduced-sodium, potassium-enriched salt in the UK. How much government intervention is required to successfully reduce the population’s salt intake? Join our talk and Q&A to find out!

This talk is a collaboration between C3 Collaborating for Health and The George Institute for Global Health.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) supports World Salt Awareness Week to join forces with the international community and promote further policy actions to reduce salt consumption in our Region and protect health in the population. In many countries, three quarters of sodium in the diet comes from ultra-processed and processed foods, such as bread, cereal and grains, processed meats, and dairy products. An effective way to reduce population intake of sodium is by reducing the consumption of these products and by lowering the sodium content of frequently consumed foods.

The aim of this webinar is to present PAHO’s tools to implement and monitor salt reduction targets in the Region and how countries can implement them in a mandatory process. To introduce the latest and most significant progress in the Region regarding monitoring of policies to reduce salt consumption, and to present the results of the analysis carried out in the Region on the economic and health effects of salt reduction policies.
