The Salty Culprits Lurking in our Kitchens
May is home to a number of important public health campaigns. Firstly, there is May Measurement Month, which aims to get people measuring their blood pressure and taking proactive steps to reduce it, and secondly, Stroke Awareness Month. Both address two very important health messages, and bring to light the importance of prevention for improved public health. UK Pizza's Bursting with Salt
Pizzas - a UK favourite. Our supermarket shelves are lined with rows upon rows of them, and they are a go to takeaway option for many. But they are also high in salt, saturated fat and calories. Pizzas are within the top 5 contributors of salt in UK diets, with adults consuming >3,000 tonnes of salt every year from pizza alone. Let’s take action this Salt Awareness Week
This year we are celebrating our 24th Salt Awareness Week between the 15th and 21st May 2023.
Over the years, high quality research has shown a direct relationship between salt and high blood pressure. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart attacks and strokes, which are the biggest causes of death in the UK, with a person suffering from these often-debilitating conditions every 5 minutes.
It is important to note, that many of these cases can be prevented. It is therefore vital that the Government and food industry take all the necessary measures to improve our health and prevent these events from happening...read more here
